For the first time in the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery’s history, social media has been used to select the content of an exhibit. Voters selected Helen Levitt’s New York, New York as their favorite work in the Gallery’s permanent collection in a Facebook-based online promotion during early February. Gallery interns, along with a first-year student from Scripps College, will use this voters’ choice as the centerpiece of an exhibit in Gallery 112.
The exhibit, Streetview: A Spectrum in Black and White, will feature black-and-white photographs from the 20th-century, which focus on different aspects of interaction and identity in urban life.
The student curatorial team has selected works by Diane Arbus, Lillian Bassman, James H. Black, Margaret Bourke-White, William Heick, Jessica Lange, Alfred Stieglitz, Andy Warhol, and Carrie Mae Weems from the Gallery’s permanent collection.
An opening reception will be held on March 24 at 8 pm at Gallery 112 in Lang Hall. Live music and refreshments will be served.
