Angela de Mott ’71

Ceramist

Angela de Mott ’71

I benefit from an extraordinary major in the Humanities, inspiring classmates and professors, as well as an appreciation of beauty and its origins.

I hand build asymmetrical vessels. Sculpturally, their form is simple and organic, pushing the limits with their thin walls. My influences include the glazes of ancient East Asian and Persian ceramics, as well as the aesthetics of modernism. They are raku and luster fired.

How the vessel’s rim speaks to its foot, the interior to the exterior, the design to the culture, how the glaze fits — this is where my education has led me.

Venues where the work has been shown include Gump’s in San Francisco, del Mano, Couturier Gallery, and the Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles, the Scripps 60th Ceramic Annual, The Collector’s Gallery of the Mingei International Museum in San Diego, and the Long Beach Museum of Art. Collectors include Sam Maloof and Forrest Merrill.

In 2007, I had a solo exhibition at the Beatrice Wood Center for the Arts in Ojai, CA, and was awarded an artist’s residency. There, I researched luster firing using Wood’s library, studio. and kilns.
