Melanie Nakaue ’01

MFA Candidate, University of California, Irvine

After graduating from Scripps College with a BA in Studio Art and a minor in Art History, Melanie Nakaue is continuing her interest in art production and critical theory at the Master of Fine Arts program at the University of California, Irvine. Her first year MFA show will consist of “merging the conflicting aspects of artificiality and reality, depth and flatness” by utilizing wall installations, foam sculptures and computer generated portraits.

“Scripps afforded me with a new way of seeing things; it opened my horizons to a different type of criticality that not only centers around the questioning of institutional precepts, but how to subvert them as well. These skills are essential to art making practice, and I feel so privileged to have received an education from Scripps…it is truly a gift.”
