Following Andy Warhol’s lead, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc. continues to surprise and delight. In 2008, Scripps College received an astonishing gift of 150 Warhol works, including 50 silver gelatin prints, as part of the Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program. Now, five years later, the foundation has chosen to donate yet again to the Scripps Collection. Seven substantially-sized prints, each created by Andy Warhol, have just been added to the Scripps collection.
Portraits, still lifes and architecture are the focus of the works. Each piece is large, stretching at least three feet across. The colors range from delicate to garish, and the style is unmistakably Warhol. Of the gift, Dr. Mary MacNaughton, director of the Williamson Gallery said, “We were quite astonished by the generosity of the Foundation. These works will make wonderful additions to the collection, which is a resource for teaching. With these pieces, instructors will have the opportunity to show students, not only how Warhol used photography as a means of expression, but how he employed printmaking as well.”

The Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Program was launched in 2007 in celebration of the Foundation’s 20th Anniversary. This unprecedented program donated over 28,500 photographs by Andy Warhol to educational institutions across the United States. More than 180 college and university museums, galleries and art collections throughout the nation participated in the program, each receiving a curated selection of original Polaroid photographs and gelatin silver prints.
