Performing the Book

Guest curator and Professor of Art Kitty Maryatt says of the exhibition, “Contemporary artists’ books on exhibit at the Williamson Gallery invite the viewer to react and decipher visual and textual cues on display. There are slyly straightforward, verbally rich tomes, architectural and archaeological constructions, books with painterly calligraphic gestures, alphabetic type explosions, and colorful puppetry. They are made out of carved bone, gilt leather, aluminum, lead, and tar paper. They hang, stand, twist and shout. This exhibit asks the viewer to participate in performing each book.”

On September 13, artist Susan Share will give the Frederic W Goudy Lecture at 3:30 pm in the Humanities Auditorium. An opening reception, to include a performance by Ms. Share, will follow the lecture.
