With the recent passing of Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler ’72, the visual arts lost a stalwart and vigorous proponent. Through her philanthropic foundations, the Scripps alumna spent decades supporting education through the visual arts. She had a strong appreciation for history, the arts, cultures, literature and languages: the very subjects that are the essence of a Scripps education. Her generosity to Scripps College is known to all who visit the campus and see the gracefully-designed residence hall which bears her name. She is also renowned for the numerous scholarships and faculty endowments she has provided to Scripps. Her most recent gift of three endowments will do much to support the arts and humanities at the College. Three women currently fill these positions: Dr. Mary MacNaughton, the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler director of the Ruth Chandler Williamson Gallery, Dr. Juliet Koss, the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler chair in the History of Architecture and Art, and Meher McArthur, the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler curator of Academic Programs and Collections. “We are committed,” said MacNaughton, “to realizing Gabrielle’s goal of pursuing excellence in the arts and humanities at Scripps.”
Many may not be aware of the fact that, among her philanthropic works, Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler supported a scholarship that allowed numerous Scripps art history students to pursue graduate studies at one of the most prestigious educational institutions in Europe.
Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler stipulated that the scholarship cover full tuition costs, as well as provide funds for room and board, allowing a graduating senior to pursue a one-year master’s degree in the History of Art at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. She knew that, as one of the world’s leading centers for the study of art history and conservation and one of the world’s finest museums, the Courtauld would offer immense advantages to Scripps students. She was eager to lighten their financial burden, aware that the rewards of this superb education far outpace its challenges, as the 15 Scripps alumnae who have been awarded the scholarship since 2000 will attest. Each, in her own way, carries forth Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler’s legacy of strong leadership and service.
