Summer Internships 2020

The Williamson Gallery internships encompass curating, conservation, and arts administration.

SUMMER INTERNSHIPS–DEADLINES:
The application deadline for the Ludwick, Phelps and Wilson summer internships is Friday, March 27 at 5 pm.

The application deadline for the Getty Marrow summer internships is Monday, April 13 at 5 pm.

All internships will begin on June 8, 2020 and end on August 14, 2020.

The internship requirements and application process for each position are listed below. For the summer of 2020, the Williamson Gallery plans to hire the following interns: 3 Getty Marrow Interns;  1 Ludwick Art Conservation Intern; 1 Peggy Phelps Curatorial Intern; 1 Wilson Art Administration Intern. GETTY MARROW SUMMER INTERNSHIPS:

In the summer of 2020, for the twenty-eighth consecutive year,  the Williamson Gallery will hire three paid, full-time, ten-week summer multicultural interns sponsored by the Getty Grant Program.  According to the Getty guidelines, these internships are “intended for members of groups underrepresented in the professions related to museums and the visual arts, including, but not limited to, individuals of African American, Asian, Latino-Hispanic, Native American and Pacific Islander descent.”

The Getty also states: “Intern candidates can be sought from all areas of undergraduate study and are not required to have demonstrated a previous commitment to the visual arts.”

Requirements for Summer 2020:
Candidates must be currently enrolled undergraduate students and have completed at least one semester of college by June 2020 and be a resident of or attend college in Los Angeles County. Students who have already served as Getty interns at the Gallery are not eligible for another Getty internship at the Gallery. Students who graduated in May or June of 2020 are also eligible to apply.

Employment: The internship is 10 weeks of full-time, temporary employment at Scripps College, from June 8 – August 14, 2020. Interns are paid an hourly rate and are hired as temporary employees, subject to Scripps College’s hiring and payroll procedures.

1. The CURATORIAL INTERN is assisting with two projects: first, producing the catalog for the 77th Ceramic Annual, the longest-running exhibition of contemporary ceramics in the U.S. The intern researches and writes about works in the exhibition, drafts a press release, compiles artist profiles, secures images, and helps install works. Secondly, the intern may assist in the installation of, and in writing texts on works for exhibitions that will take place during the fall semester. These distinct projects will provide the student with a comprehensive view of the curatorial process.

2. The COLLECTIONS/CONSERVATION INTERN: After training, the intern will assist an objects conservator in cleaning a large plaster relief sculpture at her studio in Los Angeles, and in cleaning and waxing bronze sculptures on campus. The project includes writing detailed condition reports of works and digitally photographing them, all under the direction of a professional conservator. Among other tasks, the Collections/Conservation intern would also create condition reports for a large group of documentary photographs, as well as creating digital images of the pieces

3. The VISUAL RESOURCES INTERN will help continue the digitization of slides into the online database of visual arts resources used for teaching at Scripps and in the Joint Art History Program at the Claremont Colleges. The intern, who will be trained in the Embark system by Visual Resources Curator John Trendler, will photograph, scan, and optimize images as well as assist with social media for the gallery. John Trendler will train the intern in these processes. In addition, the intern may be asked to participate in the social media that the gallery engages in, including Facebook entries, blogging, and Instagram.

LUDWICK ART CONSERVATION INTERNSHIPS:

Through the generosity of Sarah La Fetra Ludwick Campus Preservation Fund, the Gallery will hire one Scripps student for the summer of 2020 (from June 8 – August 14, 2020). The internship is designed to give Scripps students exposure to and experience in the conservation and care of the artwork on the Scripps campus.

Duties: Under the supervision of an objects conservator, the art conservation intern will work on restoring a John Gregory Shakespeare relief at the art conservationist’s studio in Los Angeles and on campus bronze conservation. The project includes writing detailed condition reports of works and digitally photographing them, all under the direction of a professional conservator. Strong organizational and writing skills are a must.

Hourly Wage: The intern will be paid by the hour. The payment reflects gross salary; taxes will be deducted. Interns are subject to Scripps College’s hiring and payroll procedures.

Qualifications: Open to sophomore (rising sophomores as well!), junior and senior Scripps students.

Requirements:

• Must submit a written report before completion of the internship.

• Must be able to devote 40 hours a week over a ten-week period.

• Must have a GPA of 3.0 or above.

• Must have taken courses in studio art and art history.

PEGGY PHELPS CURATORIAL INTERNSHIP:

Through the generosity of Peggy Phelps, the Gallery will hire one Scripps student for the summer of 2020 (June 8 – August 14, 2020). The internship is designed to give Scripps students exposure to and experience in curating and organizing art exhibitions.

Duties: The intern will organize one exhibition from the Scripps permanent collection to be shown at the Clark Humanities Museum and at Mt. San Antonio Gardens exhibition space in Claremont during the academic year of 2020-2021. With this in mind, the intern will need to be available on a future date during the academic year to present the exhibition during the opening reception at Mt. San Antonio Gardens in Claremont. Strong organizational and writing skills are a must.

Hourly Wage: The intern will be paid by the hour. The payment reflects gross salary;  taxes will be deducted. Interns are subject to Scripps College’s hiring and payroll procedures.

Qualifications: Open to sophomore (rising sophomores as well!), junior and senior Scripps students.

WILSON INTERNSHIPS IN ARTS ADMINISTRATION:

Through the generosity of Jane Hurley Wilson and Michael Wilson, the Gallery will hire one Scripps student for the summer of 2020 (from June 8 – August 14, 2020). The internship is designed to give one Scripps student exposure to and experience in the field of arts administration. This summer, the emphasis is in care of the collections.

Duties
The Arts Administration Intern will receive training and work on several projects related to arts administration. Candidates who are interested in conservation work may be offered tasks in art conservation, such as cleaning bronzes and working on the restoration of the Shakespeare reliefs with a conservator. Strong writers may develop an exhibition from the permanent collection to be proposed for the Clark. Good organizational and writing skills are a must.

Hourly Wage: The intern will be paid by the hour. The payment reflects gross salary; taxes will be deducted. Interns are subject to Scripps College’s hiring and payroll procedures.

Qualifications: Open to sophomore (rising sophomores as well!), junior and senior Scripps students.
