Ceramic Annual 2009: 65th Scripps Ceramic Annual

Assistant Professor of Ceramics Adam Davis steps in as guest curator of the college’s 65th Ceramic Annual. Davis received his MFA from the University of Arizona in 1999 and since then has worked in residency at the Clay Studio in Philadelphia, the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts in Helena, Montana, and, most recently, Lademoen Kunstnerverksteder in Trondheim, Sweden. He has exhibited widely around the US in the last decade.

Professor Davis has selected works by Tori Arpad, Christy Gast, Jeff Irwin, Charles Krafft, Io Palmer, Katherine L. Ross, Anders Ruhwald, and Reinaldo Sanguino to celebrate Scripps’ ceramics tradition. He plans to include works in the show, which he has tentatively titled “Wearing It On Your Sleeve: Sympathizers, Empathizers, Provocateurs,” that “provoke and challenge their viewers to focus in on marginalization.”

The exhibition and catalog, with an essay written by Farid Azfar, are made possible by a grant from the Pasadena Art Alliance and additional financial support from Francine and William Baker, Gloria and Sonny Kamm, Barbara and Victor Klein, Susan and Brent Maire, Diane and Igal Silber, and Skutt Ceramic Products, Inc.

On January 24 at 4:00 pm, Professor Davis will speak about the exhibition in the Scripps Humanities Auditorium. An opening reception at the gallery will follow, starting at 7:00 pm.
