Ceramic artist and educator Wayne Higby is the guest curator for the 66th Scripps Ceramic Annual, the longest running exhibition of contemporary ceramics in the United States. Higby, who is the Kruson Distinguished Professor and Robert C. Turner Chair of Ceramic Art at the New York State College of Ceramics, Alfred University, has work in the permanent collections of many museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; and the Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. For this exhibition entitled “Material Matters: Art and Phenomena,” Higby has selected works by Eliza Au, Ben DeMott, Claire Hedden, Yao Yong Kang, Howard Kottler, Hongwei Li, Maria Martinez, Walter McConnell, Chris Miller, Paul Soldner, Tom Schmidt, Betty Woodman, Peter Voulkos, and Guozhen Zhou.
The exhibition and catalogue, with an essay by Higby, are made possible by a grant from the Pasadena Art Alliance and additional financial support from Francine and William Baker, the Capital Group, Kirk Delman, David Furman, Jeff and Lisa Irwin, Gloria and Sonny Kamm, Barbara and Victor Klein, Susan and Brent Maire, the Marlin Miller Family Foundation, John Regan, and Skutt Ceramic Products, Inc. On January 23 at 4:00 p.m., Professor Higby will speak about the exhibition in the Scripps Humanities Auditorium. An opening reception at the gallery will follow, starting at 7:00 p.m.
